Spiritual Journey is in some ways the antidote to the previous album Mundane. As Mundane was a collection of fun, simple, summer music the ambitions of Spiritual Journey reach obviously further than that. Although Ewald Kegel has used his older recorded music before, for this occasion it melts into a project where the boundaries of space and time are being crossed and trespassed.
The opening track little miss was originally recorded somewhere in the 80’s on a 8-track recorder and is now enriched with a new instrumental kaleidoscope of sounds. seagull and high and mighty were recorded around 1990 but flaws in the original recordings prevented earlier release. Thanks to modern technology these flaws could now be overcome and finally these songs were ready for release. intimate sounds like a very conventional tune with acoustic guitar, brass and bass guitar but actually all tracks were produced with artificial intelligence and modern computer technology, which makes one wonder how future music will develop and what place there will be left for traditional instruments in recorded music. Perhaps the most ambitious (one might even say bombastic) track of the album is without doubt atmospheric. This track also had its roots in the 80’s as the result of a jam with a fellow musician (the prominent Roland TR-707 drum computer serves as a give away to its origins). But Ewald Kegel extensively already reworked this track in the 80’s as it debuted for audiovisual production. But in 2024, almost 40 years after its inception the track was even reworked more adding more and modern sounds to it.
But there are also new recorded tracks like lockdown, limits, first time and the finishing epic track journey which summarises the album’s goal of taking the listener on a journey where all the spiritual emotions of people are being tantalised.
